Chana masala, also known as chole masala, is a hearty Indian dish made of chickpeas in a spicy and tangy tomato gravy. This popular specialty pairs perfectly with rice or naan.

INGREDIENTS

  • 200g chickpeas
  • 50 ml cooking oil
  • 120g red onions, chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 20g Chana Masala spice mix
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp baking soda

Garnish:

  • Cilantro

Side:

  • Naan bread

PREPARATION

Soak the chickpeas overnight in extra water. Drain.

Heat 50 ml cooking oil in a large pan. Fry the chopped red onions until golden brown. Add 2 chopped tomatoes and stir. Add 20g Chana Masala spice mix, 1 teaspoon of salt, and the chickpeas. Stir for 5 minutes, then add 800 ml water. Mix ½ teaspoon of baking soda. Bring it to a boil and cover the pan with the lid. Simmer for 40 minutes over low heat. In the final minutes, put the naan bread in a preheated oven at 205°C.

Garnish the chickpeas with cilantro. Serve with the naan bread.
