Japanese green tea is made with matcha powder, consisting of the best quality dried and ground tea leaves. Matcha is considered one of the healthiest green tea variants, so it’s no wonder it’s the go to tea for Japanese tea ceremonies.
Ingredients:
- Matcha powder
- 70-75 ml water
Kitchen tools:
- Matcha whisk (chasen)
- Matcha spoon (chashaku)
- Matcha bowl (chawwan)
How to make it:
Boil water and let it cool off for 3 to 4 minutes until it’s around 75-80 °C.
In the meantime, scoop up 1 to 2 matcha spoons (or ½ teaspoon) of the powder into the matcha bowl. Stamp the powder carefully so the matcha will resolve easily and foam.
Add the warm water to the powder. Beat the matcha by making an “M” or “W” movement, until a foam layer appears on the matcha.
Tip:
Matcha tea can taste somewhat bitter, so the Japanese often serve it together with Japanse confections. Make your own Japanese candies using our recipe for rakugan higashi.
